Bolgheri
“I cipressi che a Bólgheri alti e schietti
van da San Guido in duplice filar,
quasi in corsa giganti giovinetti
mi balzarono incontro e mi guardâr.”
G. Carducci
Bolgheri is a small medieval village, named as such since 1075 after it became a Bulgarian military settlement (allies of the Lombards). It developed around the medieval castle located on a hill accessible via the picturesque Viale dei Cipressi (Cypress Avenue), whose beauty was praised by the poet Giosuè Carducci in his poem entitled ‘Davanti San Guido’ (1874), who spent his childhood here. Large trees line both sides of the picturesque road, which is almost five kilometres long and begins in the valley where “the sea is blue”.
Not far from the town centre, on a hill almost 400 metres above sea level, stands the ancient fortified village of Castiglioncello di Bolgheri, with the church of San Bernardo.
At the other end of the Bolgheri road, where the most famous wineries producing the popular Bolgheri wine are located, is the picturesque village of Castagneto Carducci.
